  • This research is intended to implement a digital proportional-integral (PI) controller in dc motor speed application based on ATMega 8535 microcontroller. In this system, the value of proportional constant (Kp) and integration constant (Ki) of the PI controller are tunned by Ziegler-Nichols method to achieve their optimal values. Code of the digital PI controller is written in C as a compromise between coding complexity to implement the PI controller and the AVR microcontroller low level machine structure. This resulted in well operating speed controller accompanied by well documented program. Experimental setup for investigation purpose has also been created. It consists of a d.c.motor coupled with a dc generator , some 6 volt incandescent lamps act as load, and and the digital controller it self. Experiment is done by applying load variations to the motor through changing the connection of the generator and lhe load lamp. Afterward, the resulted motor speed in each load change is analyzed. Experiment has shown that the controller response is fast enough to maintain motor speed constant while the load changes.
