  • This thesis analyses the issue of jihad contending the conception of enemy in the case of Imam Samudra. The problem of violence in the name of religion became more popular when Bali Bombing I took place. Imam Samudra which has found guilty for the crime came with an argument that such attack was a Jihad. This kind of Jihad distinguished âweâ and âtheyâ that transformed into âfriendâ and âenemyâ. To explore how Imam Samudra constructed the concept of enemy in his Jihad, this thesis uses Carl Schmittâs idea about political enemy and Chantal Mouffeâs thought on the process of enemy transformation. This thesis has three main bodies. Started from the Jihad biography of Imam Samudra, this thesis analyses Imam Samudraâs Jihad and the construction of enemy within as the main discussion, and closed with the informative examination on Imam Samudra and Jamaah Islamiyah. The main argument of this thesis is Imam Samudra viewed United States of America and democracy as enemy in his Jihad. The process of constructing United States of America and democracy as enemy in Imam Samudraâs Jihad was strongly influenced by the existence of this state as a single unchallenged hegemony as well as the doctrine of universal democracy.
