- Tarakan City is an island city and has so many potentials for fishery products, particularly shrimp. Most of the shrimp, particularly small ones, are processed by the community into dried shrimps (ebi). Ebi shrimp processing methods including the process of peeling the skin is still using manual methods (thumper). The method is very exhausting for the workers and has not been effective, where the yied and quality of dried shrimps produced are low due to many broken dried shrimps and badly peeled shrimps. In order to improve the yield and quality of dried shrimps as well as decreasing the use of human labor, research, planning, and the manufacture of peeler machine for dried shrimps are carried out. The peeler machine consists of six main parts, such as: frame, inlet unit, peeler system, outle unit, power transmission system, and drive system. As a driving force, the peeler machine uses gasoline engine with a power of 5.5 HP. The working principles of the machine tool are collision and friction. Substances entering through the inlet will undergo friction and collision in a spinning peeling system with a anvil base, which results in peeled dried shrimps. The average production capacity of the peeler machine is 24,3 kg/hour and fuel consumption is 0.93 liters/hour in two times peeling. The quality of peeling results obtained from peeler machine is better than by manual method, which can produce 86.1% whole shrimps and clean from the shell while the only produces 39.1%. From the economic analysis obtained net benefits-cost ratio (B/C) 1.22, break-even point in the total sales of Rp 7,551,369.00 with payback period of 0.82 years or 9 months and 25 days, and Return of Investment (ROI) as many as 18.95%.
