  • The promotion of prosocial behavior in middle childhood age (5-11 years) is important to optimize social, emotional, and academic development. This research aims to examine the effectiveness Program Aku Pintar Berteman (APB) to improve prosocial behavior by improving cognitive interpersonal problem solving skill. Three 3rd grade elementary students in experiment group were trained with the APB in 10 sessions. Three other students in control group were not given any program. This program consists of three main interpersonal cognitive problem solving skills (alternative, consequence, and means-ends thinking). The effectiveness of this program was measured by interpersonal problem case, observation and interview about children's prosocial behavior. The APB has improved the 3rd graders' interpersonal cognitive problem solving. Mann-Whitney U-test showed that this program significantly improve children's prosocial behavior (z=-1.964, p<0.05). The helping behavior improved significantly (z=-1.993, p<0.05). Other prosocial behavior dimensions such as sharing, comforts, affection, and cooperation did not improve significantly. The roles of teacher, peer group acceptance, and cultural factor in prosocial behavior were discussed.
