The acyliation of 3,4-dimethoxy-phenylacetic acid with resorcinol in BF3 etherate as a catalyst and solvent to furnish an intermediate compound 3,4-dimethoxybenzyl-2,4-dihydroxyphenyl ketone which without isolation is subjected to cyclization with N,N-dimethylformamide in the presence of boron trifluoride diethyl etherate and POCI3 to afford the 7-hydroxy-3',4'-dimethoxyisoflavone
