  • The mechanical behavior of grain was studied numerically by use of Distinct Element Method (DEM). The objective was to clarify the appropriateness of the DEM in simulating the mechanical behavior of grain. The research was done by experiment and simulation. In the experiment, the interaction of forces between elements and element-tool were measured. A computer program based on DEM principles was developed to simulate the experiment condition. The result shows that up to 25% of grain water content, the DEM was able to simulate the mechanical behavior of hard grain such as bean, corn, and rice. Dynamic behavior of grain could be reproduced by DEM. The force components were also could be reproduced with small difference in magnitude. For soft grain such as peanut, the conventional DEM should be modified for appropriate use.
