- In this research, clove drying process in sliding tray dryer type, which has five levels of trays, is made of stainless steel hole plate, the size of each is 53,5 x 51 cm2. The dryer plate is made from stainless steel plate and aluminum plate wall. Clove drying capacity is 10 kg, using LPG fuel. Before the drying process, the cloves are spread over five (5) racks levels, randomly but cultivated evenly in thickness. During the drying process, LPG fuel rate is adjusted automatically using solenoid valve, so that the drying room temperature is between 50 – 55 oC. Heating air circulation is generated by a 2" blower at full speed (full throttle openings). Relocation of cloves to different levels of trays is carried out every hour, as well as reversals, to warm the cloves evenly and not to burn. Implementation of clove relocation successively starting from the lowest level to the top. During the drying process, the drying air temperature is recorded every 10-minute interval using a digital thermometer. The quantities to be noted in this drying process are the heat of the drying chamber and the outside air, the drying time, the consumption of LPG fuel used, and the water content contained in the cloves, both before and after it is dried. Calculation of clove water content, both wet and dried cloves, is determined by reference to clove samples that are dried back using oven, to a water content of 0%. The duration of this 10 kg clove drying process is for 10 hours 40 minutes until water content decreases from 72.1% to 19.8%. The data obtained in this study then used as a basis for calculating the thermal efficiency of clove drying. The result of this clove drying efficiency is 16.7%.
