  • In traditional welding, feeder electrodes usually require dirty welds, slags, and also the deformation that occurs is quite large, due to residual stress. With FW will minimize the defects that occur and the strength of the mechanical properties better. For this reason, the researchers tried to do the welding with the FW (friction welding) method. In practice it does not use feeder electrodes, then heat is obtained from the friction of the material to be connected. This experiment does not use electrodes, heat is obtained from material friction. Used in a lathe in this experiment, then the material used is ST 37 carbon steel. The results of the connection with the FW method, no slag formed, not dirty, not cracked, not porosity, and the results are tapered, namely 167.9 VHN - 178.1 VHN and the hardness value of a flat type connection is 224.8 VHN - 198.4 VHN. The microstructure is clearly the same between the parent metal, HAZ and weld metal.
