- This antropological study describes the portrait of elderly women in Pandangan Wetan Village, ragan Regency, Central Java Province, who worked as alang-alang and how the community perception toward them. An alang-alang a tradition where an elderly woman works to beg for some fish to the fishermen. She sells the fish and uses the money to buy her basic needs. By working as an alang-alang, she only gets little money. The reason of being an alang-alang is she has to survive because of poverty, independency, the need to have cash, and necessity. The fishermen (community) feel pity to the alang-alangs and will give them some fish or other supports. The existence of alang-alang is difficult to be eliminated as long as the poverty still exists.
