- ABSTRACT Study area in village Sendangsari, Pajangan, bantul has karsts ecosystem. Daily income of local people is agriculture, cows, and goat veterinary, however most local people are working in Yogyakarta. Garden management of villagers becomes important for food supplies, so diis research aimed to study the pattern of garden management and plants used by local people for food supplies during drought season. Explorative survey has done for 20 samples of local people gardens from three strata, which are large garden, moderate garden and small garden. Usage of plants has documented using open-ended interview from 20 respondents. Local plant agriculture and photograph has collected and pictured. Every plant sampled and tuberous plants collected as living collection. Data analyzed descriptively to record local people perception of home garden as food supplies. The result study showed home garden by local people has philosophy of land-plant unity ^'karang kitri'), with their houses, kandang ternak, as well as for land digging ({'jiigdngan'), with their percepdon of ability to defense during drought season ({'paceklik"). During rainy season ({'labuh') home garden can be funcdoned as paddi field ('gogo'), cassava, sweet potato, and corn. Whereas its stem can be used as a host of several tuberous climber such as uwi {Dioscorea a/aid), many varieties of gembili (D. aculeata), gembolo (D. bidbifera), tomboreso (D. pentaphylld),jebubuk (D. mimmularid) and gadung (D. hispida). During drought season {"paceklik') local people used tuberous plant as food supplies. Other tuberous plants such as "empon-en/pon" (Zingiberaceae) for example temu larvak {Curcuma xarttborhisp), kunyit (kunir) (Curcuma jammed), temu ire ng (Curcuma heyniand), jahe (Zingiber officinale) and telo ndarak (Ipomoea sp.; Convolvulaceae) supported local people food supplies as well even though not directly, as medicinal plants traded in die traditional market.
