- Abstract A simple device capable of displaying text on a television screen is needed as a part of an effort to utilize television as a means for spreading information from the internet to rural areas, because television has been popular both in the urban and rural communities. Microcontrol/ers as an integrated circuit can be easily programmed for many applications and therefore may be used as an alternative for the development of such a device. This research aims to use a microcontrol/er for displaying the content of a text file from a computer on a PAL system colour television. The video signal generator is made using an Atmel AVR ATMega16 microcontrol/er operating at 16 MHz. An additional microcontrol/er is needed to handle other tasks. Communication between the two microcontrol/ers utilizes Serial Peripheral Interface (SP/) and an external interrupt line. The design makes use of a MC1377 IC to add colour to the display. Colour of the display is not completely stable, but the text can be read clearly. Results show that 40 characters and 12 lines can be displayed on the television screen. It has 43% more characters available on screen compared to STV5730A, the On-Screen Display product ofSGS-Thomson Microelectronics. Kata kunci : video signal, PAL, mikrokontroler, Atmel, A VR
