  • ABSTRACT The objectives of this research were to find out suitable composition of artificial diet for Cricula trifenestrata Helf. and to know better treatment between artificial diet given to all consecutive instars and to only early instars (1st to 3rd instar) then shifted to fresh leaves. The study used Factorial Completely Randomized Design with two factors: pollen weight and rearing method. As a whole there were seven treatment combinations, each with 40 individuals of larvae. The pollen weight were 15, 30 and 45 g and rearing method were to give artificial diet to only early instars, to all consecutive instars, and control using fresh leaves. Artificial diet formulation using modification of Akai formula. The result showed that the artificial diet using cashew leaf added with 30 g pollen were given to the early instars was the most suitable for C. trifenestrata. There were indicated by the lowest mortality (45 %) and better performance than the other treatments as follows: growth index (448.78), fecundity (240 ± 118.38 eggs), cocoon shell wt. (0.0383 ± 0.0126 g), shell ratio (3.35), ERR (55), and wing span (6.911 ± 0.6349 cm). Administering artificial diet to early instars showed better growth and development than those given to all consecutive instars as indicated by: developmental period (63.8 ± 3.4 days), cocoon wt. (1.06 ± 0.31 g), cocoon shell wt. (0.031 ± 0.0115 g), wing span (6.84 ±0.68 cm) and longevity (6.37 ±1.4 days). Rearing by artificial diet on all instars as follows: developmental period (72.6 ± 5.6 days), cocoon wt. (0.79 ± 0.26 g), cocoon shell wt. (0.0229 ± 0.0069 g), wing span (5.86 ± 0.72 cm) and longevity (4.68 ±1.7 days). Key words: artificial diet, cashew leaf Cricula trifenestrata
