- ABSTRACT The objectives of this research are 1) to determine the erosion hazard and its distribution, 2) Clasifying land capability, and 3) providing guidance of the watershed conservation of part of the upper course in Central Java. The research adapted survey method with land unit approach. Land use slope steepness, land form and soil were used for determining factor of land unit approach using overly techniques. The sampling method was stratified purposive sampling, with 13 land unit samples. The actual erosion is predicted by using USLE Method of Wischmeir and Smith. Erosion hazard was analyzed by using Silviculture Departement Method, the soil erosion linkage with soil solum. The land capability clasification was determined by using Arsyad Method with modified matching method. The form of land conservation were analyzed by using C, P and CP index number. The result of this research showed that, the erosion hazard in the upper course of Garang watershed are very hight erosion hazard. The very light erosion hazard in the area is 207,5 hectares (3,57%), light erosion hazard mounts to 778 hectares (13,40%), moderate erosion hazard equals to 1300 hectares (22,40%), high erosion hazard 1445 hectares (24,90%), and very high erosion hazard is 2073,25 hectares (35,73%). Variation of soil erosion is between 0,406 tons/ha/year to 884,593 tons/ha/year. Based on the slope steepness, actual Faculty of Social Science University of Semarang 2 Faculty of eography Gadjah Mada University 252 Teknosains, 14(2), Mei 2001 erosion in the class I, II and III have averagely 91,3261 tons/ha/year, and class IV and V indicate averagely 103,3762 tons/ha/year. Actual erosion average difference, caused influence plants of species and plants of pattern (C), and processing and type of conservation (P).The land capability class in Garang watershed of the upper course ranges from II, III, IV, V, VII to VIII classes. The land capability class II, III and IV in this area is 1960,5 hectares (33,78%), and the land capability class V, VI, VII and VIII is 3843,75 hectares (66,22%). The first priority of the land conservation in the study is 3273,75 hectares (56,40%, second priority of the land onservation is 1708,75 hectares (29,44%), and the less priority of the land conservation is 821,75 hectares (24,16%). Key Words : erosion hazard - land capability - land conservation priority
