- Background: Posterior segment disorders of the eye, such as: retinopathy, glaucoma, papil atrophy, intraocular inflammatory, congenital anomalies of the posterior segment have a poor visual prognosis and are significant cause of visual impairment or even blindness. It is not known how many patients with posterior segment disorders will develop blindness, especially in rural areas. Objective: To identify blindness caused by posterior segment disorders of the eye in rural areas in Jogjakarta territory. Method: We performed a cross-sectional study, and the study was carried out in four regencies in Jogjakarta territory. Total 173 patients were found with blindness according WHO criteria. Results: The author reported the frequency of blindness caused by posterior segment disorders in 79 cases, of 173 patients, and causes of blindness were: glaucoma (18.99%), diabetic retinopathy (17.72%), hypertensive retinopathy (13.92%), Intraocular inflammation/Phthisis bulbi (17.72%), Retinitis Pigmentosa (8.86%), papil atrophy (7.59%), Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) (6.33%), Hypoplasi nervi optici (3.8%), myopia maligna (3.8%), and retrobulbar tumor (1.27%). Conclusion: glaucoma, retinopathy, and radang intraocular (phthisis bulbi) constituted a public health ophthalmology problem in rural area in Yogyakarta territory. Keywords: frequency of blindness
