  • Kampung Law is a complex of dwelling of fishermen. This area consists of many small islands which are surrounded by sea called Segara Anakan. The Segara Anakan estuary and its surroundings are marked by several distinctive features. including an extensive mangrove system. and very rapid sedimentation. Many rivers emptying into this estuary carry silt and mud, a portion of which is deposited in the estuary. A variety of housing styles and materials are used with a . . number of house built on piles varying between kampungs. Most wooden dwellings have no separate kitchens and cooking is done on a small wood burning stove. Only one percent of households have bathrooms and for most people the river and tidal channels provide for bathing and lavatory use. The average number of persons per dwelling is 6.5 consists of a nucleus family as well as dependent adults and other relatives. The age structure of people is young with 43.6 percent of the population aged less than /5 year. A number of socio-economic issues can be identified: high dependency ratio, low incomes, high level of debt, lack of personal and family capital, sanitation and water supply problems. Since 1970. there has been improvement in motor ferry transportation and this has allowed diversification of employment and increased the mobility of the Kampung Lout people.
