- The objective of this study is to find the impact of the concentration index variable, macro variable, and cross elasticity, on producer expenditure on research and development (R&D). It also tries to figure out the pattern of producer expenditure on R&D, using data form the traditional medicine industry in Indonesia. The data sample used is time series data from 1987 to 1993. To meet the required number for a sample based on econometric theory, quarterly interpolation is used. This study uses the cointegration approach, dynamic linear model, and reciprocal model for analysis. As expected, the estimation result shows that the concentration index, inflation, and cross elasticity have significant impact on the R&D expenditure. The impact of the interest rate variable is significant, but its sign does not to conform to theory. This shows that R&D expenditure in the traditional medicine industry in Indonesia is not fully an investment decision, but rather is to optimize the use of idle finds. This finding is supported by its asymwtic expenditure pattern. Moreover, this small sample size used cannot form a cointegrated variable association. Keywords: research and development
