  • . Stroke is the most serious neurologic problem in the world. Despite of it's declining incidence, stroke remains the third commonnesccause of death in developed countries. Indonesia, as any other developing countries, the population have become urbanized and industrialized, therefore the incidence of morbidity and mortality due to stroke may rise. The major risk factors for stroke that can be decreased are hypertension, clinical evidence of cardiac disease, smoking, transient ischaemic attacks, hypercholesterolemia and possibly diabetes mellitus. It is estimated that 15 millions Indonesian people have a potential risk of stroke, since their hypertension were poorly controlled. Only 4% of them were well controlled. In Indonesia, comprehensive hypertension control programme in the community have not yet been carried out, although it has been initiated by physicians working in their hospitals, health centers, and in private practices. A comprehensive hypertension control programme in community should be carried out in Indonesia. Key Words: risk factors for stroke, hypertension, community control programme for hypertension.
