  • ABSTRAK Disorders Associated With Iodine Deficiency and Excess, pp. 45-59. Serono Simposia Publ., RayeEndemic cretinism is one of the many manifestations of iodine defficiency disorders. Many iodine deficiency cases have been found in many places of the world, especially in the developing countries. But the presence of endemic cretinism is always indicative of severe iodine defficiency in a particular area. Therefore, early diagnosis of endemic cretinism is essential. Neurologic endemic cretinism, characterized most commonly by mental retardation, deaf mutism and neurological defect, should be differentiated from the less common myxodematous type and can be prevented by screening of newborns followed by prompt and adequate treatment before the age of three months. Key words : cretinism, iodine defficiency, newborn screening, hypothyroidism .
