  • ABSTRACT Utilization of Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) in Indonesia is quite limited. The objectives of this research were to make phenolic adhesive from CNSL and formaldehyde using sodium hydroxide catalyst, and to study the kinetics of the reaction. The process was initiated by heating CNSL and a certain amount of sodium hydroxide in the reactor. At the same time, formaldehyde was heated in another vessel. As soon as tie reaction temperature was reached, the two reactants were quidkly mixed. Samples were withdrawn at certain intervals, then after being separated, the bottom layers were analyzed for their free formaldehyde contents using the sodium sulfite method. The top layers was used as adhesive and was tested its glue-line strength with block test of meranti's wood. The reaction was found to be second order with respect to CNSL and formaldehyde concentrations. Based on the Reynolds index and the increase of the rate constant caused by a 10° C increase of temperature, it was obvious that the rate was controlled by chemical reaction. The value of the rate constant was changed on the minutes of 20. The rate constant, k, was affected by temperature exponentially, while the speed of stirrer, mgmol ratio of CNSL to formaldehid, and concentration of catalyst showed logarithmic relations with k. Based on wood failure and glue-line strength, the results showed that CNSL adhesives could not be used as a single adhesive yet, but it might have a chance to substitute up to 40% of phenol adhesive. The composition of 40% CNSL adhesive and 60% phenol adhesive was in corformation with the Indonesian Industrial Standard and had glue-line strength of 22.21 kg/cm2 and percentage of wood failure of 31.67%.
