- ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to observe the chemical properties of bamboo apus (Giganthachloa apus Kurz), by age and axial position. Research was conducted on five of age, i,e 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 years old, with 3 replications. Each stem was cut into 3 parts: butt, middle and upper. Some chemical components were determined using ASTM procedure. Results showed that age significantly affected extractives and lignin contents, but not halo and aiphacellulose. The highest content of extractives (6.15%) was exerted by 6 year-old, while the highest content of Lignin (28,91%) was exerted by 2 year-old bamboo. The average of holo and alphacellulose contents were 73.08% and 44.70% respectively. Position along the stem did not show a significant effect on the chemical properties.
