  • ABSTRACT One of the most striking defects of the majority of Pinus merkusii plantation's in Indonesia is the existence of foxtailing trees. Foxtailing, a striking form of apical dominance, produces trees with several meter of branchless stem. This paper attemptes to present the genetic in formation in frequency of foxtailing trees on Pinus merkusii in Java. The study was done on 6 years old of Pinus merlins,' half-sib progeny test experiment in Cijambu Sumedang, Baturaden and Sempolan â Jember. The experiment contained 176 families arranged in a randomized complete block design, five tree-row plots, and replicated ten times for each site. There were highly significant differences in number of foxrailing trees among the off-spring of different families, families within types or regions for each plantation and combined plantations. The frequency of foxtailing trees decreases as the altitude of plantation site increases. There were interactions between families and sires. The narrow sense family heritabilities for foxtailing were 0,00
