- ABSTRACT The incidence of malaria in Java has taken place predominantly in pockets of high transmission areas. This study was carried out in Cilacap District, in which several pockets of malaria transmission exist Secondary data derived from local area monitoring activities showed that malaria incidence has been declining since 1990, and an average of 1-2 cases per month was reported from the whole district Occasional outbreaks did occur, although the incidence of new cases quickly subsided to a low level. The role of Anopheles aconkus in malaria transmission could not be underestimated, as clustering of malaria cases were reported from the highland and lowland areas on the border with West Java province, instead of the coastal area where Anopheles sundaicus is the main vector. The decline of malaria incidence in Kampung taut, formerly the most endemic area in Cilacap District, was mainly attributed to the improvement of the environment due to agricultural activites in the area.
