- ABSTRAK Atopic eczema is a serious problem in child health, treatment may be difficult and so prophylaxis has been sought, i.e., ways of avoiding allergents in the environment or in the diet. The purpose of this research was to study the role of breast-feeding on the development of infantil atopic eczema. A case-control study was conducted in Dr. Sardji to General Hospital, Yogyakarta, and Tidar General Hospital, Magelang, during the period from January 1986 to June 1987. Seventy babies with infantile atopic eczema were involved in this study. One hundred and twenty healthy babies aged 3-23 months were used as controls. Diagnosis of infantile atopic eczema was based on dermatological examination. Data of the history of breast-feeding was taken by interviewing the mother of the subjects. The result was statistically analyzed using chi square-test The result showed that there was a higher frequency of infantile atopic eczema among non breast-fed babies compared to breast-fed babies (p < 0,001) Key words: breast-feeding, inflantile atopic eczema
