- The need for potassium sulfate in Indonesia increases rapidly, and almost all of this commodity must be imported. Efforts had been taken to produce potassium sulfate, by oxidizing sulphur suspension in ash extract with air. The difficulty faced by that process was the feeding of sulphur suspension. The objective of this research was to reduce the problem by oxidizing potassium thiosulfate solution made from sulphur dissolved in potassium carbonate, with air. The process was performed in a vertical tube reactor provide with slanted serrated baffles. Sodium thiosulfate solution was fed continuously from the top of the reactor, and air was bubbled from the bottom. The process was continued until steady state condition was reached, which was indicated by constant pottasiun thiosulfate concentration. Thiosulfate samples were analyzed iodometrically. Besides, the concentration of sulfate was determinded gravimetrically using barium chloride solution. By varying the flow rate of air, it was proved that the mass transfer had a minor influence. This was confirmed by the value of Reynolds index of 0.1895, which was less than 0.5. The effect of temperature proved that the process was controlled by chemical reaction of pseudo first order with respect to potassium thiosulfate concentration. The value of activation energy was 11104.55 cal/gmol, which was more than 10000 cal/gmol. The reaction rate konstant was affected exponentially by temperature in accordance to Arrhenius equation kr' = 78905 e -11104.55/RT Processing of 100 mL of liquid product, produced 2.67 gram of potassium sulfate crystal having a purity of 82.37%.
