- ABSTRACT The role of export in the economic growth is still discussed until now. One of the discussion is about whether the export leads economic growth or economic growth leads export ? The discussion on relationship between export and economic growth is important because it is linked with a country's decision to choose trade policies that will be employed. This study attempts to provide empirical evidence about a causal relationship between real export as a proxy variable of export growth and real national income as a proxy of economic growth in Indonesia using quarterly Indonesian data covering the period of 1980 (1) -1997 (2). The relationship is examined using error correction model and causality test. The empirical results support for growth led export hypothesis since there is an evidence of a long run calisality from economic growth to export growth.
