- ABSTRACT Coal tar, a byproduct of gasification or carbonization of coal, contains a lot of heavy oil. Therefore, it is necessary to process it further to produce light hydrocarbon, which can be used as fuel or raw material for chemical industries. This search was carried out to pyrolyze coal tar continuously without and with zeolite as catalyst. The pyrolysis was carried out in a tubular flow reactor, provided with thermometer, feed and outlet pipes. The reactor was heated with an electric furnace and the temperature was kept constant at 873 1023 K. The products were liquid and gas. The liquid product contained benzene, toluene, xylene, and tar. The pyrolysis of coal tar and the formation of (benzene + toluene + xylene + gas) followed first-order reactions. The effects of temperature on the rate constant of coal tar pirolysis (kA), and the rate constant of formation of (benzene + toluene + xylene + gas) (kB) without catalyst could be represented by : kA = 426,3668e-g°8711RT, kB = 667,1401e'lm°3.7w, while for the catalytic process using zeolite catalyst, the values of kA and kB' could be written as : kA' = 1644,1848e-9813'811u, kB' = 1644,8426e°46"IRT. The maximum yield of (benzene + toluene + xylene) was obtained at 973 K and 2,76 glmin. feed flow rate. Under this condition the total product of (benzene + toluene + xylene) was 0,419 glmin., and the gas was 0,942 glmin. The physical properties of the liquid product was close to the specifications of kerosene. Keywords : pyrolysis, coal tar, continuous process
