The experiment used 24 two-week-old broiler chickens. The chickens were randomly divided into four froups. Group I (control) was non infected, group U, III and IV were infected with 20,000, 40,000 and 80,000 E. tenella oocysts per chick respectively. The erythrocyte counts, the hemoglobin concentration and the packed cell volume value were examined. The statistical analysis on the blood pictures showed that the erythrocyte count, the hemoglobin concentration and the packed cell volume value decreased significantly on the sixth day post infection (p < 0.05). It was concluded that infection with E. tenella could cause anemia- The difference in degree of anemia was significant (p < 0.05) only between groups H and Non the sixth day post infection. Furthermore it suggested that the degree of anemia induced can be used to monitor the degree of the severity of the Eimeria tenella infection.
