- ABSTRACT Since his ascend to throne as Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX in 1940, Gusti Dorojatun has introduced some innovations including those on the formation and development here include the institutions, content and norms and functions. In this case, there are two sides of purposes. The first side is the purpose hidden in the ritual and sacred meaning of legitimizing and considering the King and the Court as sacred preservers. The second one is the clear purpose of developping and spreading the performing arts. The first side has been done traditionally and the second one tends to become secularization. Being the main resource person, Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX is mentioned many times in this text Here he becomes the main resource person, because, as mentioned above, this text mainly talks about the life of the performing arts in the Court of Yogyakarta during his reign. In fact, in talking about the life of performing arts, the Sultan cannot be neglected He is well known as a person who pays much attention to the development of performing arts, especially in the Court of Yogyakarta He has created some classical as well as new dance compositions known as Beksan Golek Menak.
