- This thesis is on a phenomenon of middle-lower entrepreneurship in Malang. It describes who the entrepreneurs are, how they emerged, and what kinds of non-economic mechanism they have employed for their survival. The town itself, in the social hierarchy of East Java, can be categorized as a very dynamic semi-peripheral city. Analyzed from socio-cultural and political-economic perspectives, this study concludes that the entrepreneurs involved in the dynamics of the regional economy have very heterogeneous social backgrounds. Most of them are entrepreneurs of anew generation emerging and flourishing during the New Order period. The reasons behind the entrepreneurs emergence vary. Among them are compelling conditions, economic incentives, and the value changes occuring in their. society. Their accomplishment is mostly due to two non-economic strategies: (1) utilizing business professional and/or phylanthropic transnational organizations
