- ABSTRACT This thesis deals with compound sentence in bahasa Indonesia, the. aim of which is to learn the system constructing the sentence. Compound sentence in bahasa Indonesia can be classified into .two groups, namely (i) compound sentence with coordinate conjunction and (ii) complex sentence. The first sentence is constructed by joining two or more clauses, in which each clause has equal position. The second type is constructed by combining two or more clauses in which each clause does not have equal position. From the limitation above it can be seen that compound sentence with coordinate conjunction differs from complex sentence in the way they are constructed. Therefore the syntactic structure of the clauses forming the two sentences is also different. The syntactic structure of clauses forming compound sentence consists of constituents with coreferential conjunction. In compound sentence, this conjunction is marked with deletion, substitution
