  • This research was intended to study the kinetics of alcoholysis of rubber seed. oil with ethanol using 2 kinds of catalyst, namely sodium hydroxide and cation exchange catalyst, in order to produce liquid fuel for motor vehicles. Alcoholysis of rubber seed oil with sodium hydroxide and cation exchange catalyst was carried out in a 3-necked flask, equiped with mechanical stirrer, thermometer, condenser, and a sampling de Tice. A certain volume of rubber seed oil was poured into the reactor, followed by a certain weight of cation exchange catalyst. Ethanol, containing sodium hydroxide, was healed in a 3-necked flask. After the desired temperature was reached, the ethanolate was admitted into the reactor. Samples were taken every 10 minutes, and then analyzed for their glycerol content using asetin method. Alcoholysis followed second order reaction with respect to glycerid and ethanol. Temperature affected rate constant most prominently. The equilibrium constant was determined by extending the process to 6.5 hours with 1.94 equivalent of rubber seed oil, and 0.5 g of sodium hydroxide per g of cation exchange catalyst, at 78°C. The value of equilibrium constant K, was 8.1283. Several tests were conducted to determine the properties of the product according to standard method, and the results were: specific gravity at 60/60°F 0.9002, viscosity Redwood I at 100°F 42.2 seconds, flash point 482°F, ASTM colour 3.5, and heating value 38533.18 J/g.
