- ABSTRACT Afield trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of planting density on agronomic characteristics and competition ability of tobacco plant under tobacco-sorghum intercropping system in Bojonegoro. The experiment was at-ranged in Randomized Block Design, with three replications. The treatments were factorial combination of three tobaccco planting densities and four sorghum planting density. Sorghum was plantedfbur weeks after tobacco between the ridges of tobacco. Growth, yield, and quality of tobacco leaves were not affected by increasing sorghum density from 0 to 55,500 plants/ha, but they increased as tobacco density increased from 13.889 to 23.148 plants/ha. The quality of tobacco leaves did not change, but the size and weight of the leaves decreased as the tobacco density increased. Condition of precipitation was favourable for tobacco growth, so the competition ability of intercropped components were dominated by tobacco. The optimum density of intercropped components were 22,823 and 53,622 plants/ha for tobacco and sorghum, respectively. Keywords : tobacco, sorghum, intercropping, planting density INTISARI I'ercobaan lapang telah dilakukan untuk mengetahui pengaruh populasi tanaman terhadap sifat agronomi dan Jaya saing tanaman teinbakau pada sistem tumpangsari tembakau-sorgum di Bojonegoro. Perlakuan percobaan disusun secara faktorial claim Rancangan Acak Kelompok, dengan tiga ulangan. Perlakaan terdiri dari tiga taraf populasi tanaman tembakau (13.889, 18.518, dan 23.148 tanaman/ha), dan empat taraf populasi tanaman sorgum (0, 18.500, 37.000, dan 55.500 tanaman/ha). Waktu tanam sorgum empat minggu setelah tanam tembakau, dan ditanam dalam parit di antara guludan tembakau. Pertumbuhan, hasil dan mutu tanaman tembakau tidak terpengaruh oleh peningkatan populasi tanaman sorgum dari 0 sampai 55.500 tanaman/ha, tetapi variabel tersebut meningkat dengan meningkatnya populasi ternbakau dari 13.889 menjadi 23.148 tanaman/ha. Mutu tembakau tidak terpengaruh, tetapi ukuran dan bobot daun menurun dengan ditingkatkannya populasi tembakau. Pada keadaan curah hujan yang balk untuk pertumbuhan tembakau, persaingan antara komponen tanaman tumpangsari dikuasai oleh tanaman tembakau. Populasi yang dianjurkan 22.823 tanaman/ha untuk tanaman tembakau, dan 53.622 tanaman/ha untuk tanaman sorgum. Kata kunci : ternbakau, sorgum, tumpangsari, populasi tanaman.
