  • ABSTRACTThis research aims to study the functions and symbolic meanings of the traditional plates dance that lives and grows at Luhak Tanah Datar, nagari Padang Magek, West Sumatera. This dance lives in the ethnic of Bodi Batino and Bodi Caniago. Basically, it portrays the grandeur of a village chief and his success in teaching his 'nephew" to play the plates skillfully and speedily.It is the double-sided functions that make this dance interesting. On the one side, it functions as a means of customary ceremony.
