  • ABSTRACT: Relaxation and cognitive therapy are methods in behavior therapy which are usually being used to reduce anxiety in various situations. In western countries, such as the United States, those methods have been proven effective. However, they have not been tried out and proven effective in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to find out whether relaxation and cognitive therapy are effective in reducing public speaking anxiety. This study is also intended to find out whether general anxiety, assertive behavior, and self-esteem are also affected by those treatment methods. Thirty-six female students from Faculty of Psychology Gadtah Mada University participated in the study. They were selected based on their scores on public speaking anxiety scale. Subjects who had scores more than 22 or in a category of upper normal were being selected for this study. They were placed into three groups based on their matching scores. Those groups were relaxation group, cognitive therapy group, and control group. The last group did not receive any treatment. Each group consisted of 12 subjects. Treatments were conducted by two co-therapists (male and female) who had sufficient training in group therapy, relaxation, and cognitive therapy. Each treatment groups met once a week for 90- 120 minutes in six weeks. Evaluations on treatment effectiveness were measured three times, during pre-treatment, post-treatment, and follow-up six weeks after treatments had been conducted Measures being used were four self-reports on public speaking anxiety, general anxiety, assertive behavior, and self-esteem. Experimental subjects were also given evaluation form for the treatments procedures. Results showed that relaxation and cognitive therapy were effective in reducing public speaking anxiety. Subjects who were in relaxation and cognitive therapy groups showed significant decrease in public speaking anxiety and general anxiety than control group. They also showed significant increase in assertive behavior than control group. No difference was found on self- esteem. All subjects, both experimental and control groups, after treatnzent were in the same level on self-esteem measure.
