- A survey was conducted in Padang from March to May 1989 to determine the influence of farm size on production cost and profit. Seuety out of 91 broiler farms were drawn randomly as sampel. The average farm size (number of broiler raised per production cycle) was 312. The average mortality rate was 2.25%. Average total cost was Rp 1,309.31 per head, composed of day old chick cost Rp 612.48, feed cost Rp 607.16, labour cosi Hp 28.97, health management cost Rp 32.61 and variabel cost Rp 1,226.82. Regression analysis of some economic ters were Y = 3,775 + 594.27 X (Y = feed 4124 X = farms ize), Y 83.86 .84 (Y = health management cost, X farm size), Y = 246.56 r" (Y labur cost, X = farm size), Y = 6,194.75 + 1,260.10 X (Y variabel cost, X .= farm size) and Y 13,345.73 + 1,80.158 X (Y = ttal cost, X farm size). Average revenue and profit were Rp 2,472.73 and Rp 163.42 per head respectively. Break even point was 65 heads or Rp 95,034.97 per production cycle. Economic rentability was 1.27% per production cycle. All farmers sold their products locally, through the channels of merchants 81.54%, household 9.4%, restaurants 6.12% and catering service 2.87%.
