  • ABSTRACT In sugarcane intercropping, intercrop was able to reduce the yield of sugarcane. The study abaut planting dates of secondary crop species in sugarcane intercropping aimed to determine exact planting date for each secondary crop species, that give the highest overall mixture crops yield and land equivalent ratio. A field experiment was conducted at Ngrancah Village, Pengasih Sub District, Kulonprogo District from October 1992 until August 1993, on 100 m above sea level with regozol type. The treatment consisted of 2 factors arranged in a Split Plot Design with 3 replications. Three secondary crops species and 5 levels planting dates were tested In this experiment, one ridge intermittent was not planted by an intercrop. The results of the experiment showed that intercrops did not affect plant growth, stalk weight, and sucrose content of sugarcane. Planting dates of secondary crops 2 weeks before sugarcane planting showed sucrose content lower than planting dates together, 2, 4, and 6 weeks after sugarcane planting. Panting dates of peanut and soybean did not affect overall mixture crops yield, but the high land equivalent ratio was found at planting date 2 weeks before, together, and 2 weeks after sugarcane planting Key words: sugarcane intercropping, secundary crop
