- ABSTRACT Land use competition in areas surrounding the urban area is the major factor influencing rural land use changes. Land use for agricultural activities is being changed into urban use. The rural land cover can be identified on the SPOT and Landsat TM imagery. The trend of urban development toward the rural area can be studied using the SPOT and Landsat TM imagery. The aims of the study are: (1) to know the rural landuse changes, and (2) to know the urban development pattern of Surakarta. The SPOT and Landsat TM imagery are the main data sources, and the interpretation is used in getting the data. The Land cover is identified and classified based on the pixel value. The object of landuse is classified into four classes, ie.: rice field, dry field, open space and settlement Using the temporal and spatial approach, the changes of rural land use to the urban one can be known. The changes are ricefield 829.44 ha, dry field 483.19 ha, open space 236.14 ha and rural settlement 206.80 ha, all to urban land use. The largest change was ricefield and the second was dry field, both changes can influence self reliance in food program. The pattern of development of urban land use was identified as linear and leapfrog pattern of development. Kata Kunci.: rural land - Surakarta municipality - development
