- Bacterial meningitis is a fatal infectious disease, therefore a prompt diagnosis and treatment is mandatory. The diagnosis can be established clinically and confirmed using laboratory examination. Therefore, a neurologist should also master the skill of processing a cerebrospinal fluid. The gold standard diagnostic tool is bacterial culture of the cerebrospinal fluid. A combination of ampicillin and chloramphenicol has been used as a standard therapy for bacterial meningitis
