  • The design, development and testing of a charcoal - Nitrogen adsorption compressor is described. The compressor was operated between 8 and 80 bars at temperatures ranging from 210 K to 540 K The pressure and temperature variations in the compressor had important impacts on the compressor performance. A theoretical model allowing to calculate the evolution of the compressor temperature and gas pressure in the compressor during the heating - desorption and cooling - adsorption phases has been established. Empirical test data demonstrate that the analysis of the model well predicts the performance of the adsorption compressor. Because of non-existence of wear - related moving parts, adsorption compressors are an ideal choice for cryogenic refrigerator application on prolonged space missions.
