  • The previous studies showed that tuberculosis cases had low level of vitamin A and zinc, and vitamin A and zinc supplementation resulted in earlier sputum smear conversion. Vitamin A and zinc play role in the body immune response toward bacteria. Attempts to prevent tuberculosis were disconnecting the communicable chain through treatment and increasing body immune. This study was aimed at finding out the effect of vitamin A and zinc supplementation on the rate of sputum conversion among pulmonary tuberculosis patients during intensive-stage treatment. This study was a randomized double blind with control trial, i.e. supplement group (n=36) and placebo group (n=35). Both groups received the same antituberculosis treatment. Besides that, the supplement group received vitamin A (5.000 IU) and zinc (15 mg) daily for 2 months during the intensive-stage treatment and the others received placebo. Assessment of vitamin A and zinc status were carried out before and after 2 months of antituberculosis treatment. Examination of sputum smear was carried out every 2 weeks. At baseline, the levels of vitamin A and zinc of both groups were normal. Most patients (76,1%) had BMI < 18,5 kg/m2. After antituberculosis treatment the increase of vitamin A and zinc level did not show significant difference between groups
