- The objective of this study was to determine whether nitrate reductase activity (NRA) of young cocoa plants could be used as a predictor of its productivity. Eighteen bulk cocoa hybrids were used in randomized complete block design with three sets and three replications. NRA and groWth characters were measured at monthly interval for three months. Climate situation was recorded and fertilizer was applied at the second observation. NRA and growth characters were influenced by water and nutrient availability in the soil. Significant genetic effect and correlation among characters were observed in water sufficient condition after applying fertilizer . However, the usage of NRA as a selection criterion of cocoa high yielding hybrids should consider other characters.
