- Historically the practice of forest management in Indonesia is focused on the timber resource, but recently foresters are considering to utilize forests for various products. uses, and services. The challenge for foresters is how the sustainable management of the forest could be realized. To respond the need many foresters encourage forestry practices that enhance ecosystem management as a basis of forest management. An inescapable fact is that the ecosystem management may answer the need of models to put sustainable forest management concept into practices in the field. This concept may also help the forest managers in line with the era of ecolabelling for forestry products. For Indonesia. putting ecosystem management into practice in all its natural production forests will not prevent Indonesia to produce timber (log production) more than 32.000.000 m3 annually. The major challenge is the need for cooperative planning and coordination across forest concession holder (HPH) to ensure that ecosystem management is addressed at the landscape level.
