  • ABSTRACT Rengganis is a folk performance genre in a dance drama form which has developed in Banyuwangi. In some part of the area, it is known as Praburara, and in some of other part it is called LImarmaya. The name is taken from a particular story, which used to be performed, about the central characters of Rengganis (Praburara) and Umarmaya. Due to their good deeds and qualities of the characters, they have stayed in people's hearts and have become heroes. To study. this performing art, Rengganis, in relation with the context of its society, multidisciplinary approach is taken. And bearing in mind that this art takes the form of dance drama, the textual observation is in the multilevel approach with a hope that the study can be carried out exhaustively. The data of the research shows that the Rengganis dance drama emerged around 1933 taking the name of 'Langen Sedya Utama' in Cluring district. The source of the story was Serat Menak, the structure of the perrformance referred to Wayang Orang. This Dance drama seemed to have been inspired by the performance of barangan (traveling in disguise) mask, which entered Banyuwangi in the 19th century. There is a great possibility that the performance was brought by Matararn royal families when there was war. The development and innovation of the Rengganis performance seem to get influence from the travelling performances of Wayang Orang, Kethoprak, Ludruk, etc., so that the form of its presentation and the production system of management have made progress even after 1965 started to employ made-up stories (modified stories). Related to the Iife of its supporting society, the Rengganis dance drama also has its primary and secondary functions namely as the form entertainment, aesthetic presentation, the stability and survival of culture, the deliverance of messages and propaganda, and ways to earn a living. The relationship with those functions, the Rengganis dance drama has been performed in wedding parties, circumcision ritual parties, harvesting time vestival, thanksgiving occasions, and holiday celebrations. From the observation of the unique characteristic of Rengganis reflected through their elements namely the stories, the structure of the plays, the choreography, the characterization, the make ups, the costumes, the music, the dialogues, the stages and other accessories it can be concluded that this performance is influenced by different cultures using collaboration. The influences come from the performances of Wayang Orang, Kethoprak, and the cultures of Hinduism Javanese and Islam, and even using Western. The influence of this collaboration leads to the acculturation, so that this synergy has made us the harmony and the unique nature of Rengganis performance and in turn showing the uniqueness of characteristic of the Banyuwangi people.
