- ABSTRAK A forest ecosystem consists of the components biological community and soil system. From the point of human needs, the biological community forms a biotic resource, while the soil system constitutes a soil resource. The importance of forests in maintaining the living environment lays in the interfacial behaviour between these two resources. This behaviour can be studied through the interchange of matter and energy between the biotic and soil resources. Such studies generally embark on the principles of a steady state. Relevant models are employed to determine factors and processes which produce the steady state. In this context temporal and spatial factors are of great importance. These means that the significance of forests depends on time and place. Consequently. whatever research policy may be followed, it should be on a long term basis. Key word: ecosystem, biological community
