- In the last decade, many major cities in the world tried to manage their growth avoiding urban sprawl. Some of them were successful while some others were not. One of the unsuccessful cases is Florida's statewide growth management program. Lessons learnt from the case include that (1) a strong top-down approach leads to less creative local government efforts to manage growth, (2) an effective coordination among related agencies in managing growth is one of the most crucial factors, and (3) in a multi-ethnical urban areas, communication in multi-languages and with multicultural approaches is very needed to encourage city-wide citizen participation. Indonesian urban planners may start considering these lessons from America's experience in managing their cities since most of major cities in Indonesia are experiencing urban sprawl in the past two decades without-any effective growth control and management.
