- Performance of absorber, which is one of the customed design equipment, is determined by both external and internal constraints. This paper purposes an absorber design in which both external and internal constraints are considered. Absorption of chlorine gas with sodium hydroxide solution is taken as a study case. In addition to physical process, chemical reaction also occurs. The reaction is exothermic an thus the temperature has to be controlled. The ratio of recycle and product is taken as design variable. At the maximum liquid temperature of 35°C, the results of the evaluation show that optimum reflux is 1.6 for capacity of 49200 kg/hour of Na0C1 solution
