  • ABSTRACT Twenty four Javanese thin-tail ewes (11, 9 and 4 ewes with 1, 2 and 3 litter size, respectively) were used to study energy status changes from gestation to lactation. During gestation, the experimental ewes were fed king grass by ad libitum and 500g concentrate supplementation. During lactation half of the ewes were maintained in the 500g concentrate supplementation, while the other ewes were supplemented with 1000g. Blood samples were taken monthly for determination of beta-hydroxy butyric acid (BHBA) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentrations in the serum. The results of the experiment indicated that BHBA concentrations in the serum during lactation increased (P< 0.0.1) by 46.2% when compared to those during gestation (in the ewes with 1, 2 and 3 litter size, the increased were 32.1, 66.0 and 40.9% respectively). Concentration of BUN during lactation increased (P
