- The effect of chronic phosphorus deficiency of lactating ewes has been conducted. Twelve pregnant maiden ewes with single foetus were ramdomly devided into four dietary phosphorus (P) level namely very low P (VLP) = 0.72 g P/kg DM, low P (LP) = 1.38 g P/kg DM, moderat P (MP) = 2.00 g P/kg DM and high P (HP) = 4.38 g p/kg DM. The study was conducted from a nominal twenty weeks, ten weeks before and ten weeks after lambing. Milk production was monitored using tritiated water (3H), kinetics using 32P isotope and balance studies were done simultaneously 3 weeks after lambing. The results showed that chronic P deficiency significantly (P < 0.01) influenced EFP, milk production, balance P, absorption of P, coefficient of P absorption, assimilation of P into the bone and soft tissues, reabsorption of P from the bone and soft tissues while urine P, exchangeable P pool and concentration of Ca and P in the milk were not affected by the treatments. It is concluded that EFP in chronic P deficiency of lactating ewes was not constant hence the calculation of minimum P requirement need to he revised for lactating ewes. (Key words: endogenous faecal phosphorus, lactating period, chronic P deficiency, minimum P requirement.)
