- Somatic cell count (SCC) and it's associated factors had been extensively studied in dairy farms of advanced countries. Due to different conditions, the role of these factors should be different in developing countries, including Pakem subdistrict, Yogyakarta. The objective of the current study was to investigate the SCC of milk produced by smallholders in the subdistrict and it's associated factors. A total of 142 lactating cows of 66 smallholders was taken as samples by means of a multistage strategy. Milk taken form these samples was subjected to SCC counting using Breed method. Possible associated factors included those from farm and individual cow. Linear regression was utilized to obtain an optimum model of the factors associated with SCC. The mean of the SCC of milk in the subdistrict was found to be 238,845 ± 54,623/ml. As much as 8.5% at animal level and 16.7% at farm level showed SCC of higher than 300,000/ml. The optimum model revealed in the study indicated that SCC negatively associated with daily production and positively associated with previous mastitis and farming experience. This model gave an approximate rankit of 0.9886 after conversion of SCC into log SCC. It was suggested that these factors should be prioritized in management practice to improve the quality of milk produced, in terms of SCC. Keywords: SCC -smallholder -factors - model
