- ABSTRACT Welding is very important in the shipping industry, primarily in making and repairing steel ships. In making a new ship, the amount of the work of welding, is a third of the whole work. The welding process itself brings about a danger of radiation caused by the welding rays produced, that will be dangerous for the welders. This study was aimed to find out the correlation between the exposure of the welding radiation and the cataract formation among the welders. This study was a non-experimental research and used the cross-sectional design. This study was conducted at the PT. Dok dan Perkapalan Kodja Bahari (Persero) UPJ n, Jakarta. There were 52 welders being the studied subjects. The dependent variable was the cataract formation that were confirmed by a doctor. The independent variable was the exposure of the welding radiation, in this case, the ultraviolet-rays measured using the UV meter. Descriptive and correlation analysis were used in this study. The results of the study showed that there was a correlation between the exposure of the welding radiation and the cataract formation among the welders (p = 0.031 and CC =0,287).
